This year, five YMCA of Greater San Francisco locations are celebrating milestones ranging from one year to 115 years, showing how San Francisco’s communities have shaped the Y, and in turn, how the Y has influenced the development of the city’s iconic neighborhoods.
“Each of these Ys reflects the people and history of its neighborhood,” said Erin Clark, Chief Operations Officer, YMCA of Greater San Francisco. “Their anniversaries celebrate more than longevity. They demonstrate what’s possible when an organization stays rooted in community, listens, and evolves alongside the people it serves.”
The Chinatown YMCA marks 115 this year as one of the oldest locations. Founded in 1911 as the Chinese YMCA, it holds a unique place in American history as the nation’s first YMCA established for Chinese Americans and remains a cornerstone of the country’s most influential Chinatowns.
The Buchanan YMCA, celebrating 90 years, was founded in 1936 as the Japanese YMCA to support Japanese Americans before and after World War II. Today, it is a multicultural anchor in the Western Addition and Japantown, and is home to YMCA Urban Services.
The Bayview Hunters Point YMCA turns 30 this year, commemorating its milestone with a “30 Years on the Block” campaign. Known as a trusted anchor for generations of local families, it is home to one of the city’s busiest Family Resource Centers.
Also celebrating 30 years, the Presidio Community YMCA traces its roots back to 1898 to the Army YMCA in the Presidio. As the only YMCA in the nation located within a national park site, it enables more than 16,000 youth annually to connect with nature through outdoor education and environmental stewardship programs.
Rounding out the milestones, the Dogpatch YMCA marks its first anniversary. Opened in March 2025 as the first new YMCA location in San Francisco in 30 years, the branch occupies a renovated waterfront warehouse at Crane Cove Park with sweeping bay views, an on-site café and direct access to outdoor recreation.
These YMCAs share one purpose while reflecting the communities around them: they create places where people can be healthy, build meaningful relationships and find support.
