ON.energy Awarded Landmark Patent for Medium Voltage UPS Systems

AI workloads are changing how power systems need to behave. High‑density GPU clusters create rapid, megawatt‑scale load swings and sensitive ride‑through requirements that challenge traditional data center power designs and utility interconnections. Legacy low-voltage Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems struggle to deliver both the protection and dynamic control these workloads demand.

ON.energy’s newly awarded patent addresses this gap with an integrated architecture that combines a double-conversion UPS, an energy storage system on the DC bus, and an Energy Management System (EMS) with advanced controls.

“This patent locks in our core UPS architecture, engineered to track the true dynamics of hyperscale workloads,” said Ricardo de Azevedo, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at ON.energy. “Double-conversion UPS combined with storage and closed-loop EMS control delivers load stabilization for high-density racks, dynamic peak management, and unbreakable runtime guarantees amid evolving grid conditions.”

The patent also covers closed-loop battery control and integrated safety monitoring. The system continuously adjusts battery power in response to changing AI workloads while enforcing safe operating limits and controlled recharge behavior. This enables operators to dynamically reduce grid consumption within the system’s operating envelope, support peak shaving during defined high-rate windows, and execute energy time shifting aligned with time-of-use schedules.

For AI data center operators, that means a single UPS platform can both provide uninterruptible power and help manage exposure to grid conditions. For utilities and grid operators, the same controls allow large AI campuses to behave as more predictable, grid-supportive loads rather than unbuffered sources of volatility.

This newly awarded patent supplements ON.energy’s broader portfolio of patented and proprietary technologies underpinning ON.AI UPS™, the company’s medium-voltage UPS technology for grid-safe AI campuses. The AI UPS™ has been tested at the National Laboratory of the Rockies’ Flatirons Campus under realistic grid and load conditions and is being deployed across large-scale AI and hyperscale projects.
